Alejo Véliz joined Tottenham Hotspur from Rosario Central in August 2023 but was unable to find his footing in English football, struggling to break into the first team on a regular basis.
The Argentine forward was shipped out on loan to Sevilla in January 2024, followed by a spell at Espanyol, though he failed to nail down a consistent role at either club.
Last summer, Spurs sent him back to his former side Rosario Central on a season-long loan arrangement.
During the January window, Brazilian outfit Bahia made clear their desire to sign the 22-year-old permanently, with Tottenham willing to do business. An offer was accepted by the north London club, but Rosario Central refused to cut his loan short, blocking an immediate exit.
By February, reports indicated that a fee of around €9m had been agreed for Véliz to complete a permanent switch to Bahia when the summer window opens.
On Tuesday, the striker got on the scoresheet in Rosario Central’s commanding 4-0 Copa Libertadores win over Universidad Central de Venezuela. His visible emotion after the final whistle sparked widespread speculation that the occasion may have been his last appearance for the club.
The following day, reports emerging from Argentina suggested he had already said his goodbyes at the Gigante de Arroyito, with his move to Bahia anticipated to be wrapped up once his loan expires.
Rosario Central captain Marco Ruben paid tribute to the striker, wishing him well and acknowledging the contribution he had made to the side, while expressing hope that their paths might cross again in the future. Véliz himself reflected on the weight of responsibility that came with representing the club — particularly in the iconic number nine shirt — and vowed to continue giving everything wherever his career takes him next.
Tottenham are now poised to offload the striker on a permanent basis, having originally brought him to north London for roughly £13m. He managed only a handful of appearances for Spurs before a succession of loan moves, and the anticipated €9m sale will officially draw a line under his time at the club.
