Tottenham Hotspur have hit a stumbling block in their pursuit of a new attacker, with talkSPORT reporting that Liverpool have no intention of selling Cody Gakpo this summer.
Spurs have had a strong window under Roberto De Zerbi, adding Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali. Even so, the club are still keen to add further attacking depth before the season kicks off.
Gakpo had been seen as one of Tottenham’s top targets after a strong World Cup showing with the Netherlands, but that pursuit has now taken a hit.
Liverpool Standing Firm on Gakpo
The 27-year-old put pen to paper on a new Liverpool deal worth around £250,000 a week last summer. Despite talk of a possible exit following a disappointing domestic season, Liverpool have decided to keep him at Anfield.
The Reds are set for changes elsewhere following exits for Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah, with Federico Chiesa also expected to depart and Curtis Jones drawing interest from other clubs. But new boss Andoni Iraola reportedly sees Gakpo as central to his plans and has ruled out selling him.
Liverpool are also strengthening out wide, having brought in Victor Munoz from Osasuna — another reason Gakpo’s role at the club remains secure.
Spurs Look Elsewhere
With Liverpool refusing to budge, Tottenham are expected to shift focus to other options. Manchester City’s Savinho remains high on their list, while AC Milan’s Rafael Leao has also been strongly linked with a move to north London.
De Zerbi Still Chasing Firepower
A deal for Gakpo was always going to be tough given Liverpool’s thin attacking options and likely steep asking price. Still, Tottenham have proven this summer they’re capable of pulling off big-money deals, having already landed Fernandes and Tonali.
De Zerbi is reportedly after a versatile forward who can operate on the left and chip in with goals across the front line — a profile that fits Gakpo well. But with Liverpool determined to hold onto him, Spurs will now step up their search for alternative attacking options, with more additions expected before the window closes.
