Cristian Romero accused of stirring trouble at Tottenham following ‘disgraceful’ social media comments

Cristian Romero has publicly criticised Tottenham on social media amid the club’s ongoing injury problems and a subdued transfer window in North London.

Spurs came from two goals down to draw 2–2 with Manchester City at the weekend, but Romero was far from satisfied after the final whistle. The centre-back took to Instagram, writing: “We only had 11 players available – unbelievable but true and disgraceful,” a comment widely seen as a swipe at either the recruitment or medical staff.

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that such public criticism from the club captain can be damaging behind the scenes. He warned that Romero’s influence on younger, less experienced players is significant, and airing frustrations publicly risks harming morale within the squad.

Brown had previously claimed that Tottenham are concerned about potential dressing-room unrest, with frustrations building both on and off the pitch. Combined with poor results and increasing fan pressure for Frank to be sacked, the atmosphere at the club has reportedly become toxic.

“Romero taking shots at the club isn’t good for anyone,” Brown said. “Complaints about recruitment don’t really hold up. When a team is struggling, the last thing they need is their captain making negative comments publicly.

“It gives weaker personalities an excuse to join in, and it sets a bad example for younger players. Romero and others need to take some responsibility for how this season has gone.

“Injuries are a serious issue, but they’re part of football. For him to immediately look for someone to blame — whether it’s recruitment or the medical team — isn’t right. They can’t defend themselves, and I don’t like that.”

Meanwhile, Tottenham also suffered disappointment in the January transfer window after failing to secure a deal for Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson. Spurs made an approach to strengthen their defence, but Liverpool ultimately decided against allowing the 31-year-old to leave.

Tottenham are thought to have revisited the situation on deadline day, but the Reds remain firm on keeping Robertson for now. Brown told Football Insider that the Scotland international is instead expected to leave Liverpool on a free transfer, which has already attracted interest from several European clubs.

With Robertson potentially available for nothing, rival teams could now move ahead of Tottenham in the race for his signature.
