Rio Ngumoha was left completely “speechless” after receiving his first England cap from Jude Bellingham following England’s narrow 1–0 victory over New Zealand.
The highly-rated Liverpool forward, currently with England’s World Cup training camp in Florida to aid preparations, made his senior Three Lions debut on Saturday after coming on as a second-half substitute. At just 17 years and 281 days old, Ngumoha became the fifth-youngest player ever to represent England, behind only Theo Walcott, Wayne Rooney, Jude Bellingham, and James Prinsep.
It proved to be a memorable outing for the teenager, who impressed enough to be named Player of the Match after a lively and direct performance on the right flank.
After the final whistle, Jude Bellingham presented Ngumoha with his England cap and delivered a classy speech in front of the dressing room, praising the youngster’s debut and predicting a bright future both at club and international level before handing over the honour. Clearly overwhelmed, Bellingham described it as a pleasure, confident there would be many more caps to come.
Visibly emotional, Ngumoha responded by thanking his teammates and staff, admitting he was speechless and grateful, while promising to keep pushing forward.
The 17-year-old is one of four young prospects included by Thomas Tuchel in England’s Florida camp alongside Alex Scott, Josh King, and Ethan Nwaneri, although he will not be part of the squad for the upcoming World Cup tournament. FIFA rules prevent late replacements unless players come from the official provisional list, meaning only Alex Scott is eligible if changes are needed before England’s opener against Croatia on June 17.
Ngumoha, however, remains available for England’s final pre-tournament friendly against Costa Rica.
