Liverpool’s reported agreement on personal terms with PSG youngster Ibrahim Mbaye has been met with caution, with conflicting reports suggesting the Reds may not actually pursue a transfer.
Mbaye is understood to be open to a move to Anfield after Liverpool showed interest in the highly rated young forward. The 18-year-old came through PSG’s academy and made his senior debut in 2024, gaining valuable first-team experience despite fierce competition for places.
However, agreeing personal terms with a player does not necessarily mean Liverpool are ready to negotiate with PSG. The club may simply have explored Mbaye’s situation, including his contract, ambitions and potential transfer fee.
Daily Mail journalist Simon Jones has urged caution, stating that Liverpool’s interest in Mbaye has so far been “exploratory” and that the club are currently unlikely to push ahead with a deal.
That does not necessarily rule out a future move, but it suggests Liverpool have yet to make Mbaye a priority.
Mbaye remains an attractive option given his pace, direct style and potential to develop over the long term. However, Liverpool must weigh that potential against the risk of bringing in a player with limited experience at the highest level.
Bayer Leverkusen have also been linked with the Senegal international, whose PSG contract runs until 2028.
The situation could also depend on Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola. The Reds have reportedly explored a move for the France international, although negotiations with PSG remain complicated.
Barcola would offer a more proven attacking option, while Mbaye would represent a longer-term investment with significant potential.
For now, Liverpool appear to be keeping their options open. Even if personal terms have been discussed, the Reds still have to decide whether Mbaye is someone they genuinely want to pursue or simply an alternative being monitored alongside other targets.
