Tottenham In Strong Contention For €30m Barcelona Star Amid Van Hecke Transfer Turmoil

Tottenham Hotspur have submitted a formal offer of €30 million, plus up to €5 million in add-ons, for Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo, according to Managing Barca. Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi is said to be a strong admirer of the Uruguayan, viewing him as an ideal addition to bolster his defensive rebuild both physically and in terms of top-level experience.

The proposed deal reflects Tottenham’s intent to push forward following their fight for Premier League survival last season. Araujo, now 27, has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most combative defenders — known for his pace, power, and aggressive defending — and has long been regarded as one of Barcelona’s most reliable figures at the back.

However, his form over the past campaign was not at the level he showed during his standout 2022-23 season, with the Uruguayan featuring less prominently under Hansi Flick. Despite that dip, his overall quality and top-level pedigree continue to attract interest from clubs across the continent. De Zerbi is reportedly convinced Araujo is the right man to fill the void left by the confirmed exit of Cristian Romero.

Barcelona’s Financial Position Opens The Door

Barcelona’s openness to entertaining offers is driven largely by their continued financial constraints and the need to meet La Liga’s economic regulations while also funding new registrations. Tottenham’s package — potentially worth €35 million in total — is said to have prompted genuine internal discussions at the Catalan club, with some board members viewing the proposal as a practical way to address short-term financial pressures.

Nevertheless, Barcelona are unlikely to agree to a sale unless the fee reflects what they consider Araujo’s true market value. Sporting director Deco and senior club figures are believed to view the current offer as insufficient, meaning Spurs may need to increase their bid before any real progress is made.

Araujo himself has previously expressed a wish to remain at Camp Nou and fight for his place, though the combination of Barcelona’s financial situation and the appeal of Premier League football could yet prove decisive.

What Araujo Would Mean For Spurs

Should the deal go through, Araujo would become a marquee addition to a defensive unit already being strengthened by the arrivals of Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson. His signing would further cement De Zerbi’s overhaul at the back and could see Tottenham enter the new season with one of the most transformed defensive setups in the Premier League.
