Tottenham Hotspur Add Sixth Signing as Roberto De Zerbi Overhauls Squad — Bergvall Now Eyeing Exit
Tottenham Hotspur haven’t been sitting idle this summer, already landing six new signings as Roberto De Zerbi puts his stamp on the north London club.
The Italian boss has bolstered nearly every area of the pitch. Martin Dubravka joins as a free-transfer goalkeeper, while Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson beef up the backline. In the middle of the park, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have also signed on. De Zerbi’s business isn’t finished, though — attention has now turned to the forward line, with Savinho, Rafael Leão, and Eli Kroupi Junior all mentioned as possible targets for N17.
Rebuilding a squad this heavily means clearing space too. Yves Bissouma, Alejo Veliz, Alfie Devine, Radu Dragusin, Luka Vuskovic, Joao Palhinha (loan spell ended), and Randal Kolo Muani (loan spell ended) have all left since last season wrapped up. Vuskovic’s exit was the standout deal financially — Brighton paid £46m for the young defender, who never made a senior appearance for Spurs despite being tipped as a major prospect for the future. Now another promising academy product could be next out: Lucas Bergvall.
Signed from Djurgårdens for roughly £8.5m two years back, Bergvall cleaned up at the club’s end-of-season awards in 2024/25, shining even as Spurs endured a rocky campaign that saw them finish 17th domestically while still claiming the Europa League title.
This past season brought three managerial changes, and Bergvall — someone Pep Guardiola once called “unstoppable” — found it hard to lock down a regular spot. With Spurs investing £185m in Tonali and Fernandes for his position, and no European competition to look forward to, the 20-year-old now wants out in pursuit of consistent playing time.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano shared the latest on his YouTube channel: Nottingham Forest have already had a £38m offer knocked back, and Newcastle have now joined the pursuit too, seeing their own £46m bid rejected.
Romano explained that Bergvall is expected to depart Tottenham this summer, having made clear to the club that he wants regular starts. According to Romano, the midfielder feels that with Fernandes and Tonali now in the building, and no European football on the schedule, he’s not willing to settle for a bench role or brief substitute appearances. Both Forest and Newcastle are said to be actively engaged in talks, making it a situation worth monitoring closely.
Beyond Bergvall, further exits are expected — Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario are also tipped to leave, while the situations of Richarlison, Pape Matar Sarr, and a handful of younger players remain up in the air.
