“What on Earth Was That Chant?” — Roberto De Zerbi Left Fuming After Leeds Supporters Stir Up Controversy in Tottenham Stalemate

After Leeds United’s tense 1-1 stalemate with Tottenham Hotspur at Tottenham Stadium, manager Roberto De Zerbi turned his attention to a section of traveling supporters, publicly condemning a chant he found wholly inappropriate during the second half.

Spurs had taken the lead in the 50th minute through Mathys Tel, who pounced on a quick counter-attack that caught Leeds’ defense off guard. Tottenham largely controlled the game from that point and looked set to claim all three points at home.

Leeds, however, had other ideas. A foul on captain Ethan Ampadu inside the box in the 71st minute was confirmed as a penalty after a VAR check. Dominic Calvert-Lewin coolly dispatched the spot kick three minutes later, quieting the home supporters and earning Leeds a hard-fought share of the spoils.

Despite the spirited comeback, the loudest talking point after the final whistle came from De Zerbi’s press conference. Visibly unhappy, the Italian coach addressed chants from a portion of the Leeds away end, stating that what he heard had no place in football culture. While welcoming passion and support, he drew a firm line at behavior he felt went too far, distancing his club from it entirely.

The specific chant in question was not officially identified, though footage circulating on social media fueled debate among supporters of both sides. Some Leeds fans pushed back, framing it as part of normal football rivalry, while others sided with their manager and called for more constructive backing of the team.

On the table, the point keeps Leeds well-placed in the upper half, whereas Tottenham were left to rue another dropped lead at home. Calvert-Lewin’s coolness from twelve yards salvaged the result, but for De Zerbi, the conduct in the stands clearly weighed heavier than the final score.
